Gift of the Givers

Winter Warmer 2009

Gift of the Givers Winter Warmer project started in June 2004, with an initial distribution of 55,000 blankets. The project has experienced exponential growth with a distribution of 100,000 blankets in 2008.

In 2007, Jacaranda 94.2FM partnered us in this project and, as a result, contributed R1.7 million to us in 2008, an overwhelming testimony of the compassion of South African donors. Given the increasing need amongst the underprivileged in recent years, we have expanded our Winter Warmer programme to include the distribution of new clothing, new shoes, tracksuits and jerseys totaling millions of rands.

This year promises to be bigger and better. With the global economic downturn, the great number of job losses and the ever-increasing masses of hungry people, we intend expanding our feeding scheme and distributing food parcels as part of the Winter Warmer project.

In addition to our continued partnership with Jacaranda 94.2FM, this year we are joined by Pick ‘n Pay (selected stores in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and North West - see list of stores below), Spar (selected stores) and Berco. These selected stores will place a trolley in their store for the collection of non-perishable tin canned foods, which will be collected at regular intervals by Berco and distributed by GOTG.

The distribution of blankets has been widespread - a huge percentage reaching deep rural areas. These blankets are manufactured in Malawi, in GOTG colours and according to our specifications. In the process, we are supporting jobs and a poor neighbouring economy. In keeping with our policy of upholding the dignity of fellow humans, we do not distribute second hand blankets. We either distribute a GOTG green and yellow blanket or a blanket of a similar quality.

How you can help

Blankets can be purchased at R40 per blanket or you may donate a new blanket of good quality. You may also donate non-perishable tin canned food (no expired stock).
