Gift of the Givers

South Africa

Disasters in South Africa
Impendle Hurricane, Christmas eve, 24 December 1994, was the first local disaster Gift of the Givers responded to assisting 300 families with food parcels and blankets. The relief was carried out with Premier Frank Mdlalose, Provincial Social Welfare Minister Gideon Zulu and Provincial Traditional Authorities Minister Nyanga Ngubane. The following year we were involved in the Christmas Day floods in the Edendale valley providing 500 food hampers, cooking pots, eating utensils, blankets and new clothing to individual families; also mattresses and carpets were given to relief shelters. The assistance was spread over several areas including Kwa Pata, Mpumuza, Vulindlela, Slangspruit and Plessislaer.

Over the years we have assisted in various disasters throughout South Africa. These include minor shack fires to massive runaway veld fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, xenophobic attacks, cholera epidemics and diarrhoeal outbreaks caused by infected water supplies. Depending on the type of disaster the response includes:

  • Tents, blankets, mattresses.
  • Food parcels, high energy and protein supplements.
  • Pots, cooking utensils.
  • New clothing.
  • Bottled water, water purification tablets.
  • Detergents and plastic buckets.

Below is a list of the very many disasters we have been involved in over the years in South Africa.
