Gift of the Givers

Fire disaster Mpumalanga July 2007
On July 26, 2007, disaster struck Mpumalanga where veld fires raged through the province. Ten people had died, 37,400 hectares of plantation and 15,000 hectares of grazing land were destroyed. There was also damage to infrastructure, adding to the economic devastation.

Gift of the Givers (GOTG) donated a total consignment of 20,000 food parcels, 500 tents, new clothing and shoes and 20,000 blankets. With the province’s Disaster Management, GOTG distributed the relief goods to families of the fire victims in Nelspruit, Bushbuckridge and Hazyview.

Six months later, on January 30, 2008, GOTG donated further humanitarian aid to the Mpumalanga Department of Local Government and Housing. The aid comprised of school uniforms, shoes, food parcels, food supplements and milk, intended for orphans, HIV positive people and disabled people in the areas of Zwelisha (Mbombela), Hazyview and Bushbuckridge. One hundred disabled people received special-made shoes to assist them to walk. The orphans and disabled people were identified through the assistance of social workers and the Department of Health and Social Services.
