Gift of the Givers

Portugal

Madeira floods and mudslides were the result of an extreme weather event that affected Madeira Island in Portugal. As of 26 February 2010 there were 42 confirmed deaths. However, with at least 8 people still missing, the final death toll is still uncertain. At least 100 people were seriously injured with many left displaced.

On 06 October 2010, Gift of the Givers responded by handing over a new Mitsubishi L200 4x4 to the Red Cross for the benefit of the community. Just 8 months after the first flood, whilst our team was in Madeira, a second flood struck on 20 February 2010, leaving people in devastation once again. Club Maritimo, a Portugues soccer club who we worked closely with, received our much needed and greatly appreciated 5 containers of relief aid sent for distribution amoungst the flood affectees. More commonly known as Maritimo, they assisted with the distribution of aid items to 2000 families.

The President of Maderia, Alberto Joao Jardium
met with the GOTG team to extend a welcome and also to express his gratitude for the contribution made to his country in their time of dire need and distress. Club Maritimo's president, Carlos Perreira also handed over 100 year medals to Gift of the Givers at their 100 Year ball as a token of appreciation. The Madeira Minister of Public Works, Luis da Silva and members of Club Maritimo handed over a cheque
to GOTG of R133 231.24 .

The aid package included the following items:
  • Bottled Water
  • Water Unit
