Pakistan Flood Relief Day 28 Part 1
Day 28 - Saturday, 18 September 2010 - 12:10am. We arrive in Hyderabad City, three hours drive from Baajera. The security of our international guests is paramount. We had to find safe, appropriate and secure accomodation even if it was this far. The first document to sign at the hotel reception was an acceptance/waiver of police protection for foreigners.

At 1am we meet for "lunch" in the restaurant, our last meal being breakfast 20 hours earlier. At 1:30am we get the news that another 90 villages are wiped out by the rising flood waters from Manchhar lake, very close to where we were carrying out our relief activities a few hours earlier; also comes the disturbing news that a 6.3 earthquake has struck from Lahore right up to the North West Province. The drama in Pakistan never ceases to unfold; floods, earthquake, political violence. Its time for the group to rest exhausted bodies.

We return to Baajera at midday; relief items are handed out to the 150 families we could not serve the night before; the onset of darkness, rising flood waters and security issues necessitated our departure.

We were the first relief team that reached Baajera and now were about to be the first team to reach Jhangera, an area a few kilometres up the road from Baajera, where 300 villages were wiped out by water that rose from 10 feet to 35 feet, and where no aid had reached in 14 days. Villagers had used up their last reserves and were desperately hungry. Said one of the tribal leaders to us: "Don't judge our need by what we wear. We will have no home, no food and no resources but our clothes will always be clean, pressed and neat, because that is our dignity".
