Mandela Day has tremendous symbolism attached to it depending on the frame of reference. For Gift of the Givers it's synonomous with service as this is the ideal we represent. In general, our 22 categories of projects are geared towards empowerment, sustainability, acute aid delivery and long term development, ALL with one aim, to bring HAPPINESS, a SMILE, HOPE and CREATE OPPORTUNITY for humans in distress.
Mandela Day is no different. This year eight programmes have been set up in keeping with some of the ideals above. With the World Cup having just taken place in Africa, the need to keep it alive and to take the benefits further in terms of enhancing soccer development among the youth, features in our events. In summary:
Johannesburg:
16 July 2010 - Visit to the Ephraim Zulu Old Age Home in Soweto at 16h00 to donate food parcels, blankets, a walking frame and wheelchairs. 17 July 2010 - Visit to the Bethesda Home for homeless and abused children in Klipspruit, Soweto, at 10h00 to donate food parcels, blankets, new clothes and sweet packs. 18 July 2010 - 1500 volunteers to take part in clean up of Johannesburg inner city; meet at Mary Fitzgerald Square at 8am. The mayor, police commissioner and several other city officials will participate in this clean up campaign in respect of our precious environment.

Kimberley
17 July 2010 -Revamp of the Swedish Hall in Collville at 13h00 - painting, cleaning and gardening and handing out of blankets and food parcels to those in great need. 18 July 2010 -Official opening of Reatlegile Creche in Donkerhoek at 09h00. We are donating blankets, mattresses and bulk food items.
At 10h00 we will be joined by several representatives from provincial and local government to entertain a 1000 children at Galishiwe Stadium, where children will participate in soccer matches; sweets, blankets and food will be given to all these children. A 1mx1m Mandela cake will be cut. Many of the children attending are physically and mentally challenged.

Cape Town
18 July 2010 -Santos coach, Boebie Solomons, who now heads Gift of the Givers soccer development programme will impart coaching skills to 800 children from extremely poor areas. 14 full soccer kits and balls will be handed out to 14 teams and a grand lunch has been prepared for all these participants at Swartklip Sportsground (site of a fan park), Mitchells Plain. Programme starts at 10am. A huge cake will be cut and blankets handed out to all the participants.

Durban
18 July 2010 - Caring for the elderly, the indigent, mentally and physically challenged children and the marginalised through a grand lunch and an impressively decorated hall to make people feel special is the aim in Durban at an event held at Pastor Stanley Moodley's church hall. 500 hygiene packs sponsored by Checkers; blankets and a rechargeable light from Gift of the Givers will be distributed.

The Mandela Day events are taking place within a massive nationwide Winter Warmth campaign and a programme of delivering 200 full soccer kits to deserving teams in South Africa. Both of these campaigns are at a very advanced stage.
