Gift of the Givers

05/05/2010 - GOTG Careline Counselling Celebrates it's 13th Anniversary
We have experienced tremendous growth since our humble beginnings 13 years ago. Offering psycho-social support pre dominantly as a telephonic counselling service, we have emerged into an organisation that among other things offers face to face counselling in addition to the telephonic counselling previously mentioned to individuals, couples and families (including children), who experience a range of challenges in their lives.

These challenges amongst others could range from loneliness, depression, abuse, marital and relationship discord, learning difficulties and behavioural problems in children, working with grief and loss.

Over the years we established a toll free line making our services accessible to every one across the country. Apart from fielding calls within the country, individuals from afar afield as Mozambique, Malawi and the UK have benefitted fom our services. We have supported and empowered a substantial number of people emotionally and this has impacted positively not only in their own lives but all those who they come into contact with.

We train our own volunteer counsellors, continously upgrade their knowledge and skills, take special care of their emotional wellbeing and development so that we are able to give of the best to our clients. We offer support groups in many areas namely “Women in difficult relationships”, “Grief and Loss in children and adults”, conduct lifeskills workshops in schools and across the community. We work extensively with HIV/AIDS Awareness and education and have public talks on pertinent issues affecting the community. Over the years post graduate Psychology students have served their internships with our organisation, a relationship that has proven to be mutually beneficial to both us and the tertiary institution. Most recently we expanded our services in the Western Cape region by providing a face to face facility at our Cape Town office.

We are proud of our accomplishments but at the same time realise that a lot more work needs to be done. To this end we have growth strategies in place and have established partnerships with many organisations in the field so as to widen our reach and maximise knowledge, skills and material as well as human resources.

To coincide with our anniversary we have a stand at the Midlands Liberty Mall in Pietermaritzburg during May 2010 to showcase our programmes. We will also be visited by a Professor and a team of 11 Social Work students from Florida State university early in May.
