Gift of the Givers

United Haiti Memorial Service 08 May 2010
On Saturday, 8 May, the Anglican Church and Gift of the Givers unite in an event to remember and honour those who passed on in Haiti, Chile, China, Madeira, Brazil and all recent disasters, natural and man made. A march through the streets of Cape Town followed by a candle lighting ceremony in St George's Cathedral with messages of support commemorates this joint initiative. But this event is not only about the deceased.

It is a celebration of the resilience of survivors as witnessed in Haiti and the wonderment of what can be achieved in unity and humanity as South African Society in general, including the South African Government, media, donors and well wishers, Gift of the Givers sent in four teams of highly skilled search and rescue personnel, medical teams and essential medical supplies. 64 year old Ena Zizi was pulled out of the rubble alive, 7 days after the event, and thousands of patients were treated and many lives saved. USA and French teams branded our teams as the dream team.

Presently 27 containers of aid, in excess of 500 tons are enroute to Haiti via commercial shipping. The Anglican Church equivalent in Haiti, viz the Episcopal Church, and in particular the Archbishop Zache will receive the R8 million cargo. The event at St Georges Cathedral is a celebration of this huge achievement of South Africans transcending racial, religious, cultural and political barriers as South Africans, working as humanity in the interest of greater humanity. Come one and all, join us and let us affirm our unity as South Africans, embracing and recognising cultural, racial and religious diversity as a gift to our rainbow nation.
