We run our feeding scheme project in Gauteng and the Western Cape. Gauteng We started a mobile soup kitchen in March 2008, which covered the Berea area in Johannesburg. In March 2009, the weekly feeding scheme grew to five feeding points in the greater Johannesburg area and in May this has increased to seven feeding points. People are fed either hot, thick soup or a lentil stew along with bread and rolls. Due to the global economic crisis, food prices have increased exponentially. Our feeding points are strategically chosen so that food can be provided to children, the elderly (Tembisa), refugees, working people and those living on farms. We have seen that even when people are employed, they still cannot afford the higher food prices, and even they are queuing for a hot meal.
Western Cape
The feeding scheme started in Cape Town in July this year at a feeding point in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain.
