| Open Source Computer Labs |
The Gift of the Givers Foundation set up the largest Open Source Computer Lab of its kind in Africa in Northbury Park Secondary School, Pietermaritzburg in 2006. The facility has 110 computers. The advantage of Open Source being that the source code is known, the software can be modified and the software is free, irrespective of the number of PC’s on the premises. This is a huge advantage for the populations of Africa, where propriety software for individual machines are so expensive, and so often, more than one type of software package has to be purchased; this becomes extremely costly as it has to be purchased for every machine. This facility was opened by the Minister of Education for KwaZulu-Natal, Ms Ina Cronje. Over the month of September and October 2010, the Open Source Computer Lab, received a much needed upgrade. The existing setup was replaced with brand new hardware and the software was upgraded to meet with the current requirements of the Department of Education. Learners were delighted by the system upgrade and just in time for the national examination. This upgrade of R300 000.00 included:
Photo Gallery - 2010 Upgrade GOTG sets up computer labs at Northbury Park Secondary School By Mr KC Maharaj, Principal Over 50% of our school learners are doing either Computer Application Technology or Information Technology in Grade 10, 11 or 12. We have two qualified educators, Jibi Rajeev and Junaid Ebrahim. In the mornings, during breaks and afternoons, our learners can access the internet for a small charge. It is also our vision to expose our Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners to formal lessons in the near future.
The above mentioned facility has been made available to our school and community by the kind generosity of Gift of the Givers. When our school’s Governing Body made the initial approach to Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, he immediately responded by spearheading the project in securing an open source computer laboratory. Dr Sooliman's response was to ensure that all role players were fully involved in the project. Educators spent their weekends at the school during December 2005 to assist with the wiring and networking of the computers. Educators were involved in constructing the benches and stands for the computers and past learners were involved with preparing the laboratories. April 2006 saw the official opening of the two computer laboratories by the Minister of Education, Ms Ina Cronje and GOTG's Dr Imtiaz Sooliman (pictured above). It was a grand affair attended by all our learners and over 200 invited guests and role players. The Gift of the Givers Foundation has committed themselves to the upgrading and servicing of the equipment. This initiative has ensured that
