Flood Relief to Top 4 Million Rand
It has been a long journey in responding to the South African Flood crisis that commenced in Orlando on 17 December 2010. As in Pakistan the South African flood is an expanding natural disaster, cutting across seven provinces resulting in billions of rands of agricultural, infrastructural and personal destruction and the unfortunate loss of more than a hundred lives.
Gift of the Givers, with your generous support, has continued the relief operations into several areas.
Today, our largest distribution to date, takes place at the Lindelaahle West Church, Themba Khoza in Ivory Park, Extension 3 at 12 noon. With full support from the SAPS, JMPD and assisted by officials from the Department of Social Development we intend distributing 3000 Food Packs, 3000 Household Packs, New Clothes, Blankets, Nappies and feeding a hot meal to more than 4000 people.
As in other areas, given the general poverty of those affected by the floods directly, it is our policy to distribute provisions even to neighbours not directly affected. These are areas of great poverty, of need, even before the crisis occurred, so giving out an extra item or two to non-affected families is not an issue, but absolutely appropriate. It is heartbreaking to give a few and let others, with equal levels of poverty just "watch" simply because they did not suffer some degree of destruction. Accordingly, if you examine the accompanying spreadsheet it is obvious that there are generally more recipients than actual flood victims. Upington and other affected areas are next in line to receive aid from us in the coming days bringing our total relief to just above R4 million and more to follow.
