Upington Welcomes Gift of the Givers

When Allauddin Sayed, toast of the passengers on the Johannesburg to Upington flight, was enveloped by Afrikaner businessmen, farmers and representatives of the largest auditing firms in South Africa, all unanimous of the dire need of vulnerable families in the flood ravaged plains of the Orange River surrounds, he knew from the enthusiasm, the warm reception and the generous accolades heaped on him by these passengers that something special awaited him in this region.

Generously supported by Old Mutual with a R200 000 cash contribution, R100 000 free fuel from BP and on going, unlimited support in kind from Unilever, Gift of the Givers trucks from Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and Johannesburg converged in the city of Upington with the usual supplies which have been the hallmark of our response in the flood stricken areas throughout South Africa. Within minutes of our arrival, the areas were abuzz with awareness of our presence, with Allauddin fielding calls from curious residents, volunteers, school principals and church representatives. An initial assessment confirmed that many roads were inaccessible and it was impossible to deliver by road.

Today, for the first time since our initial response in Orlando, Soweto, on 16 December 2010, distribution of relief goods are going to be effected by helicopter, courtesy of the SANDF. Old Mutual representatives will accompany us on these flights.  Areas to receive supplies include Keimoes, Lennertsville, Skanskop eiland, Bloemsmond informal settlement, George eiland and Rooikop eiland.
