Flood 2000

A catastrophic flood occurred in Mozambique in the early months of 2000. Relentless rainfall lasted for a period of five weeks resulting in the death of around 700 people. Approximately 44 000 people were left homeless, over 20 000 herds of cattle lost and 1 400km2 arable land affected. It was said to be the worst flood that Mozambique had experienced in 50 years.

Gift of the Givers Response:

Responding to the overwhelming 2000 flood havoc in Mozambique, we worked with the South African National Defence Force, which provided five C130 Hercules aircraft, enabling us to send off relief aid valued at R2 million and which comprised 52 tons of maize, 50 000 water purification tablets, numerous tents, mattresses, blankets and vast quantities of new clothes and shoes, as well as additional foodstuffs, such as cooking oil, beans, rice and a selection of tinned food.
