Lebanon

War 2006

The 2006 Lebanon war, known in Lebanon as the ‘July war’, was a 34-day military conflict. The conflict started on 12 July 2006 and continued until the United Nations-brokered ceasefire on 14 August 2006. The conflict killed between 1191-1300 Lebanese people and 165 Israelis. The Lebanese infrastructure was severely damaged and around one million Lebanese had been displaced.

Gift of the Givers Response:

Our response to thousands of people ravaged by circumstances in war-torn Lebanon followed a plea from the then South African Honorary Consul to Lebanon, passed by two intermediaries which said, simply: "We need aid urgently."

Rapid and intense negotiations involving the Department of Foreign Affairs and both the Governments of Jordan and Syria paved the way for our mercy mission. We collected 80 tons of emergency supplies and ferried them out of South Africa aboard two aircraft.

A 'safe air corridor,' opened by Jordan enabled us to fly supplies aboard several aircraft from Marka to Beirut Airport - having both hired five Royal Jordanian Air Force C130 Hercules aircraft and purchased additional supplies from the Jordanian Military Surplus Stores - delivering 100 tons of relief aid to Lebanon. Our 20-strong team distributed to thousands of refugees a range of relief aid, including medical supplies, food, baby food, mattresses, eating utensils, water purification tablets disposable nappies and sanitary pads.
