Haroon Surtee, 41, is a physiotherapist by profession and has always been in the health and fitness industry. Cycling has been a passion for Haroon from youth. He only started entering races at age 38, his first race being the 60km Edenvale Challenge in 2006. Since then he has participated in the Pick ‘n Pay 94.7 cycle challenge (a distance of 94.7 km) from 2006 to 2009. In 2009, he entered the Pick ‘n Pay Fast One in Johannesburg from Nasrec to Vanderbijl, a distance of 103 km. All races were completed. Haroon is a parent who is trying to raise money for his son’s tertiary education. He would like to highlight the importance of quality education and the sacrifices parents make in order to provide this for their children. Mxolisi Mdeleshe, 26, is a student currently studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree at the University of South Africa (UNISA). This will be his second trip of this nature. The first one was when he rode from Pretoria to Cape Town in December 2008 in harsh conditions. Mxolisi is struggling to put himself through university. He would like to use this trip to create hope, define new possibilities, to inspire people to chase dreams and achieve big things and to fight stereotypes. Aklilu Goitom Tesfagaber, 22, hails from Eritrea and aspires to become a professional cyclist. He has already raced with the best cyclists in South Africa and is now proud to be part of a team whose goal is to reach out to underprivileged kids so that they can have a better future through education.
