Gift of the Givers

Cycle Tour
Cycling for Education
Gift of the Givers embarks on a seven-province tour for Education Projects.

The prosperity of a nation depends on the degree of its investment in Education. The investment needs to be supported by a relevant curriculum, effective management, dedicated educators, "thirsty" learners, enthusiastic parents, a motivated civil society and insightful corporates. The energy dissipated by this type of collective would develop a highly efficient society which would make a meaningful contribution to the development of the country and continent, in this case, South Africa and Africa respectively.

Gift of the Givers has been involved in education in a range of projects since 1997. But the ever increasing demand on its resources and the magnitude of need of the children and learners of our country required a Special Initiative; an initiative that highlights the importance of acquiring education and the need for those of means to support it intensively. Making relevant interventions, inspiring children to excell, getting buy-in from corporates, government, donors and society in general will accelerate the innate potential of our society which is exploding with talent but lacks opportunity. This cycle tour is about AWARENESS TO ENHANCE OPPORTUNITY for the children of our country.

Commencing on 26 September 2009 at the Savannah Mall in Polokwane, three dedicated riders will be travelling through seven provinces (Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, North-West, Northern Cape, Free State and Gauteng) creating awareness of the importance of education and raising funds for the initiative. The tour ends at the Union Buildings, in Pretoria on 10 October 2009.

Coupons at R10 each to support the Education initiative will be sold at participating shopping malls en route and are available at our offices (Johannesburg 011 832 1546; Pietermaritzburg 033 345 0163; Durban 031 208 2312; Cape Town 021 638 7909) . Alternatively, the public can sms "Coupon" to 39017 and R15 will go to the cause or sms "Gift" to 31032 and pledge any amount (cost of sms R1.50). Uniforms, stationery, sports equipment, items for physically and mentally challenged learners, building materials, nutrition items, bursary and scholarship contributions, fertiliser, seedlings and other in-kind items will add to the campaign and will certainly be welcomed.

Attached to this email is a profile on the three riders, some of Gift of the Givers education projects in pictures, a breakdown of the tour route, the participating malls, and the various legs of the journey where cyclists can join the initiative (but you must inform us in advance). The Basic Education Minister, some Premiers, several Mayors and the Department of Community Safety Sub-Directorate, Road Safety Promotion (Gauteng) endorse and support this project.
